Symptoms of Heart Murmurs and Congestive Heart Failure in Dogs and Cats

Symptoms of heart murmurs and congestive heart disease in dogs and cats can include:
  • Easily tiring after exercise
  • Bluish discoloration of the tongue
  • Sudden collapse
  • Difficulty breathing
  • A persistent dry cough
  • Accumulation of fluid in the lungs, leg or abdomen
Pets with heart disease need a diet rich in Omega 3s, low in fat and sodium. A high fat diet can create a lot of extra work for your pet's heart. Fish oil and lean protein sources are very beneficial.

Natural heart supplements for dogs and cats can help your pet with heart murmurs and congestive heart failure:
Amazing Omegas - highly purified fish oil delivering therapeutically high levels of Omegas without the toxins

Purrfect Pet CoQ10 - these softgels use an advanced technology that provides an efficient and natural method of nutrient delivery, offering enhanced absorption and assimilation versus ordinary capsules and tablets containing Coenzyme Q10.

Mr. Bojangles Is Dancing Again!

From Worthless and Abandoned To Cherished & Loved: Mr. Bojangles is Dancing Again!

Pictured above is Mr. Bojangles, a 4 year old Italian Greyhound Miniature Poodle mix. Mr. Bojangles came into the Orange County Shelter as a stray. He was covered with mats and you couldn't even see his face under all his matted hair. His skin was in very bad condition due to having fleas and matted fur.

The Orange County Animal Care Center had a special adoption event where all the adoption fees were waived and the dogs could be adopted for free. Still Mr. Bojangles did not get taken out of the shelter. His value was "worthless" and no one was even willing to take him.

The next day, Ariel Rescue adopted him and gave him a "beauty bath and haircut". A brand new dog emerged from all that matted hair. Mr. Bojangles was a happy, healthy dog ready to play and have fun!

Mr. Bojangles was adopted by a couple who have a female Bichon Frise. Mr. Bojangles never has to worry about being overlooked ever again. He is now the pampered, cherished pup that he should be.

Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist promotes and supports the rescue of unwanted cats and dogs in shelters. Please consider adopting your next pet from an animal shelter. Homeless pets of all breeds can be found on http://www.petfinder.com/

Supplements Can Help A Dog With Lymphoma

Is It Too Late To Try Pet Cancer Supplements When My Dog Has Lymphoma?

Q: Have a 12 1/2 yr old shiba inu dx 1/2010 with b-cell lymphoma, stage 3a. Did 19 wk CHOP protocol and she went into clinical remission after 4th treatment. Very few side effects. Immediately changed diet to hi protein/fat, low carb, no grain. Added l-arginine pills (n/d food wasn't tolerated). Finished proto - went 3 1/2 mos before it re-emerged. Started CHOP again, went into clinical remission quickly, finished protocol this past April - held remission for another 3 1/2 months - started to re-emerge again. Changed to elspar/lomustine as her response to CHOP was slower than the first two times. So far - so good - nodes are very close to being completely down.

Feel like I am missing an all important supplement for her. She takes metacam daily (hip dysplasia and arthritis) and soloxine for her thyroid. Was thinking of arteminisin but not sure about the dosing requirements. Am open to homeopathic supplements - is it to late to use the Canine Lymphoma Supplements for her? She still has good vitality and bright, clear eyes...

Thank you! Ann L.

A: First, let me say I am so sorry that your dog has lymphoma and complement you for all that you have done to try to help. I am sure you have had a lot of emotional ups and downs through this time period. One of the most common questions we receive comes from pet owners wondering if it is too late to try supplements with their sick pet. The answer really depends upon the state of the pet's current condition. When a pet is no longer eating, spends most of the time lying down or sleeping and there are more bad days than good days, then the best thing a pet owner can do is to let them go peacefully. But, most of the time, the pet still has some spunk left, has good vitality, bright clear eyes and is eating on his own.

The benefit of supplements for treating canine lymphoma or any type of cancer is that it gives your pet a boost. The canine lymphoma supplements  include time tested products such as Immune Harmony and Curcumin that have been used safely and successfully by many dog and cat owners.    We have seen dogs with lymphoma tolerate the chemotherapy much better  when using these products and their quality of life and longevity is improved.

14 year old Boxer With Dementia Keeps Going Strong!

Sophie, our sweet boxer, is now 14 years old. Boxers generally only live 8 - 10 years. Thanks to Ask Ariel's Brain Vitale and diet program, Sophie is going strong physically and mentally. As many senior dogs do, Sophie had developed pancreatitis and was having digestive issues; she did not want to eat. Susan Davis, Ask Ariel Nutritionist, formulated a low fat diet for Sophie and recommended using the supplements, K9 Digestive Enzymes and Lypozyme. Sophie no longer has pancreatitis and she is back to chowing down her meals.  The K9 Digestive enzymes stopped her tummy rumbling and the Lypozyme cleared up her pancreatitis.

As Sophie got older, she started to bark and bark for no reason. It seemed like she had dementia which affects some senior dogs. She seemed to not even know that she was barking. Susan recommended the supplement Brain Vitale for healthy brain function and we got our Sophie back. She is back to her old self, playing with our other boxer, and the barking has all but stopped.  Nothing helped with the doggie dementia until we started using the Brain Vitale.  It made a big difference in her temperament and energy level.

We know that we would not have our senior dog, Sophie with us today if is wasn't for Ask Ariel's help with Sophie's diet and supplements.

Constipation, IBD and MegaColon in Cats

Dear Dr. Gordon,
Can you please help? My 13 year old cat has recently developed a problem with having a bowel movement. It seems as if she gets into position to defecate and then passes only a small quantity of poop. I haven't changed her diet on done anything different. What could be wrong?
- P.B.

Dear P.B,
Although your kitty's inability to pass stool is not normal, there could be a lot of reasons why this is now occurring. Perhaps she is in pain and cannot maintain the position long enough to facilitate a bowel movement or maybe she is drinking less water than she should and has now become constipated. Another scenario could be that she is drinking adequate amounts of water, but her kidney function has deteriorated, not allowing her body to absorb necessary fluid. A normal hydration status is very important in maintaining proper digestive tract health. She may also have lost some strength with her advancing age and could be having problems "pushing" the stool out.

It is essential to use Amazing Omegas for your cat to help make her feel better. Amazing Omegas may help lubricate the bowel and reduce inflammation, thereby helping increase bowel movements.

There could also be a mechanical obstruction to the outflow of the stool. If something is blocking the passage of the stool (a growth or tumor), your kitty may strain and strain but will be unable to pass normal quantities of stool. The stool that is passed may be blood tinged and very hard.

Often veterinarians are presented with elderly cats that have become so constipated that the stool is, literally, rock hard in the colon. It takes a very perceptive owner to realize that their pet is having problems passing stool since most cats are fairly discreet and secretive about their bathroom habits. The first sign is usually a decrease in the normal quantity of stool that must be cleaned from the litter box. If undetected, some of these cats will have distended the walls of the colon to such a degree that nothing can possibly pass. If this rock hard stool is present for more than a day or two, they may also lose the ability to feel how much stool becomes stagnant there. The resulting condition is termed "megacolon" which is the presence of a large, distended colon devoid of any feeling.

Veterinarians are not really sure why certain elderly cats develop megacolon and others are able to have normal bowel movements their entire lives. This condition is currently under investigation at many university hospitals. Usually, once a cat has developed this condition, it can be managed with diet, laxatives, and medicines, but it is seldom reversible. It certain severely affected patients, surgery may be considered to eliminate the portion of the colon that has become devoid of sensation.

Usually your veterinarian will try to determine if there are any underlying causes for this condition. This may necessitate a battery of tests (bloodwork, urine analysis) if the doctor is not able to palpate "or feel" a mass in the distal colon that is causing the obstruction. The doctor may want to take xrays to determine how obstructed or constipated your cat is. To relieve the obstruction, many of these patients must be anesthetized to allow the doctor to relieve the obstruction.Warm water enemas with stool softeners are used to try to break down the rock hard stool. Digital manipulation is sometimes successful.

Management of these cats after relieving the obstruction involves using oral laxatives and stool softeners to "keep things moving" and motility modifiers to inhibit re-obstruction. Dietary changes and supplements such as fish oil and Probiotics may also help. The most successful motility modifier is called "Propulsid". This used to be readily available for human patients but has since been withdrawn by the FDA. Your veterinarian can still get this medication compounded by a special pharmacist. Unfortunately, once a kitty has presented for a severe case of megacolon, it is usually something that will need attention for the rest of the cat's life. With some guidance, good nutrition, and good veterinary care, any of these cats can go on to lead a fairly normal life.

Natural Holistic Treatments For Cats with Constipation and Megacolon:

1) Change your cat’s diet. Be sure your cat is eating a high fiber, high moisture diet. Avoid potential allergens such as grains and poultry. Dr. David Gordon and Susan Blake Davis are available by telephone to assist you in developing a comprehensive program for your kitty. Click here for more information about scheduling a telephone consultation.

2) Amazing Omegas may help lubricate the bowel and reduce inflammation, thereby helping increase bowel movements.

3) Power Probiotic can reintroduce “friendly bacteria” which are instrumental in improving the overall strength of the intestinal tract

4) Liver & Gallbladder Nutritional Supplement For Pets is a gentle liver support product increases bile flow which may be helpful for some cats

5) Adding a teaspoon of pumpkin per meal mixed into food can help

Labrador Has Allergies, Skin Problems and Yeast in Ears--Gets Better Using Natural Alternatives To Cortisone

"Bruiser, our labrador retriever, had chronic yeast, ear infections and skin problems. We had been to the veterinarian many times but the problem would just come back. We scheduled a consultation with Susan Davis and followed her dietary and supplement recommendations. Bruiser's yeast finally cleared up and I receive many complements on how nice his coat looks. It was the best consultation fee I could have spent"

-Genette, Hawaii

An integral component of dog allergies is inflammation as the immune system reacts to the unwanted substance. One conventional veterinary treatment for allergies is cortisone which treats the symptoms of allergies (e.g. itching) but not the root cause. Cortisone has many long-term side effects, especially if used for more than a few weeks.  If your dog or cat has chronic, severe allergies and you have already tried modifying the diet, then Immune Harmony should be your next step in supporting your pet's immune function.

Another thing you can try is an air purifier which can be very helpful in reducing environmental allergies. Our natural anti-infection formula can be used topically to help heal hot spots. Allergy testing and desensitization can also be effective, although rarely 100% effective, in eliminating allergies in dogs and cats.

REMEMBER: Allergies in dogs and cats are a symptom rather than a cause in themselves. They often occur as a result of the long-term build-up of toxins and so the goal is to detoxify the body and enhance the immune system as well as to treat the overall allergy symptoms.

1) Be sure you are using a hypoallergenic, low carbohydrate diet.
2) Try using basic allergy support such as Amazing Omegas fish oil
3) Bathe your pet regularly during the hot summer months using a medicated shampoo from your veterinarian. Ask your vet for the best shampoo.

Save Money and Extend the Life of Your Pet!

With the current economy, we are all looking for ways to save money. It is hard to make ends meet and cutting costs is a priority for everyone. However, short-term gains may result in long-term negative consequences for your pet. Take a look at our handy tips and see where you can save and where to invest for the long-term health of your pet.

Stop and think the next time you buy your pet’s food. Look at the label. What’s really in there? Is there corn, wheat gluten, brewer’s rice and other fillers? Are there names you can’t pronounce such as ethoxyquin? What are they doing in your pet’s food anyway?

Your pet’s food label should list fresh ingredients such as meat, fish, vegetables and healthy omega 3 fats. Invest in a high quality brand and you’ll find that instead of spending more on the high quality brand you’re actually SAVING money because you’ll end up using about ½ the recommended amounts (it takes a lot more food to fill up a pet using food that is loaded with fillers) AND the long-term benefits to your pet are immeasurable. Please visit the Animal Protection Institute to learn more about pet food and how it is prepared.

Avoid purchasing those cleverly marketed, commercially prepared treats that make you think you are actually doing good for your pet. You know—the ones in pretty shapes and colors (e.g. orange carrot-shaped treats made to give you the impression you are giving your pet a carrot) or with dogs begging on the front of the package. Don’t be fooled either by those “all natural” economy packs (sold at the big warehouse stores). Many of these “all natural” jerky treats are manufactured with harsh chemicals and contaminants. Pets can get upset tummies and health problems from eating them. The "bargain" treat bag can actually end up costing you money because of the long-term health consequences on your pet.

Instead, use fresh ingredients right from your kitchen. There are lots of affordable, healthy options. For dogs, give them apple slices, baby carrots, a slice of potato, a piece of hardboiled egg or a piece of fresh, LEAN meat. Your cat would much prefer a piece of salmon or fish anyday over a treat that looks like fish made with corn flour, by-products and syrup.

Veterinary bills will most likely be the single largest expense for your pet. By far though, the highest veterinary bills arise from emergency, unplanned visits. You can actually keep your veterinary bills under control by planning ahead and making smart choices NOW! With a bad economy comes bad decisions that can have permanent effects on your pet’s quality of life and longevity. How many of us have thought about switching to a lower cost food, skipping on the vet exam or delaying much needed laboratory work for our pets??? DON’T! A penny saved today will not result in a pound tomorrow—just the opposite. There are plenty of other healthy ways you can save—e.g. drinking less coffee, bringing lunch to work, cutting back on alcohol, candy bars or cigarettes and still do your best for your pet.

Exercise! Exercise with your pet and you will see the dollars flow in over the years. Want to know one of the main reasons pets end up at the veterinary office with emergency, unplanned visits? Well, many of the them have diabetes, cancer, joint problems, liver problems—all have strong correlations with obesity and being overfed and underexcercised. Obesity, lack of exercise is not just a matter of style or looks—it is a matter of good health. Take out a feather or laser toy for your cat--- go for a walk with your dog and everybody benefits! Not only will you save money on your veterinary bills but you will build a stronger bond with your pet and give them a happier, healthier life!

Almond Flour For Baking

Wanted to pass on a nutrition tip that is great for anyone who likes to bake. This is especially nice if you eat gluten-free. Try using some almond flour in place of regular flour in your baking. Today I baked some gluten-free, sugar-free cookies and they were tasty. Almond flour is just ground up almonds but you can make cookies out of it or replace some of your baking mixture with it. Has a delicious RICH flavor. I also use coconut oil in place of some butter and combined with the almond flour is very delicious. Almond flour has many benefits. It is higher in protein than regular flour and MUCH lower in carbohydrates. When we eat high carb foods, we have a tendency to crave more and more as our insulin goes up. Ever find after you eat one brownie that you have to eat 3 more--that is why!!! So by using some almond flour in your baking, you can reduce your overall carbohydrate intake and the insulin surge that follows eating high carbohydrate foods (especially if you use lower glycemic sweeteners rather than sugar for the baked item).

Exercise---It's Great For You and Great For Your Pet

Exercising may be one of the best ways for you and your pet to feel better!  When our pets don't feel well, we have a natural inclination to focus on medication, food and supplements but we forget how important exercise is for your pet's general well being.  Exercise can help with mobility, depression and circulation.  For example, I often talk to clients whose dogs have arthritis and because their dog is "slowing down", they have stopped walking them.  That is the worst thing you can do.  Exercise improves blood flow, circulation throughout your body and improves your immune function.  For example, pet owners with tiny pets may often treat them like "pocket pets" and carry them around with them everywhere they go.   One of the most common ailments of these "pocket dogs" is that they are constipated, develop knee problems and other health conditions as a result of lack of exercise.  They may go everywhere but being carried is not the same as walking on their own.

Walking and exercising is good for you too.  Sometimes when you are feeling down, the very best thing to do is to take a walk and "clear your head".   Walking can increase blood flow to the brain and overall, just get your body feeling better overall..  Being sedentary decreases blood flow to all parts of your body which further weakens you.  It is the same for your pets.  If you have a diabetic pet, for example, try to find ways to keep them moving.  Exercising can lower blood sugar levels and help reduce the amount of medication your pet needs.  Cats with diabetes can benefit from playing with a laser toy or by putting food bowls at higher places so they are challenged to move around.

No matter what stage of life, exercise is good for you and your pets.  So....with the nice weather here, please make an effort to help your self and your pets by exercising every day and making it a priority!

"Happy New Year! Thank you for keeping our Labrador Stanley well. He just celebrated his 9th Birthday! He has not seen his general vet or specialist since his diagnosis. We attribute his wellness to your products! YOU have BLESSED us immensely! Each time we receive an order from you, somehow Stanley knows "his ladies from California have sent him a package." Our heartfelt gratitude to all of you!"

Immune Harmony

Immune Harmony 60 capsules

This is a fabulous product---very unique and well tolerated by most pets. This product is helpful for all immune conditions and can be used to treat cat and dog cancer in conjunction with chemotherapy and/or prednisone. Rather than overstimulating your pet's immune system, this wonderful product helps the body to rebalance immune function. Thus, you will see improved results over time not instantly as if you were using an antibiotic. It slowly builds in your pet's system and helps them feel better overall. We have many highly allergic pets that were scratching and itching horribly last summer, that now with continued use, are seeing their pets having a much easier time this summer. Immune Harmony does not treat symptoms immediately but over time as the pet's immune function improves, most clients report solid long-term improvement . If your pet has chronic allergy symptoms, a serious immune condition such as cancer or an autoimmune related disorder, research shows that Immune Harmony should be utilized. This is a unique one-of-a-kind product that has been scientifically tested in various world-wide studies. Immune Harmony is the only supplement that offers 300 mg of plant sterols plus powerful antioxidants (Enzogenol®) that protect the body from free radical damage, and an essential fatty acid complex (BiolysateTM) that supports the digestive system and assists in the bioavailability of these health-promoting nutrients.

Dogs and Cats with Cancer—Dogs and cats with cancer have compromised immune systems. If your pet is undergoing chemotherapy, this can also weaken your pet’s immune response. Many oncologists may prefer for you not to use immune stimulants while your pet is undergoing chemotherapy. What makes Immune Harmony so great is that it is an immune modulator, not an immune stimulant. Safe to use for pets with cancer who are undergoing chemotherapy or not. The product works over time to help build the body’s immune response.

How do the ingredients in Immune Harmony help to rebalance and support the immune system? Hundreds of studies performed in the United States and worldwide have found the sterols contained in Immune Harmony to be effective in preventing disease and maintaining health. It is also very safe, since no known toxicity has been found. The research has found beta sitosterol to have anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and immunomodulatory properties. Immunomodulatory means to regulate or balance the immune system. If someone has a weak immune system (e.g. cancer), beta sitosterol can activate the T-cells (immune cells that go to the thymus to be activated) and natural killers cells; these cells fight foreign organisms that invade the body and also fight cancerous cells. On the other hand, if the immune system is over active, as is the case with allergies or autoimmune disorders, beta sitosterol can calm down the immune system.

In the area of cancer, scientific studies indicate that beta sitosterol has a powerful inhibitory effect on breast, prostate, and colon cancer. Recent studies provide evidence that increased consumption of polyphenols can reduce the risk of prostate, breast, lung and digestive cancers. In addition to the plant sterols, Immune Harmony includes some beneficial ingredients that enhance the effectiveness of the product, making it especially unique. To learn about the ingredients in Immune Harmony or for more information on the product and how to better treat cancer in your cat or dog please visit our website. Click here for more information.

Sophie the Therapy Dog Helps Bring Cheer!

Sophie the therapy dog has brought so much cheer to the people she helps take care of. Jack was sent home on Hospice and had very little time. Sophie spent a great deal of time with him while he was sick and the last few hours with him. He loved her as she did him. The only couch that Sophie has ever been allowed to jump on was his as he wasn't able to reach down. Besides his immediate family, Sophie was the only one allowed in the room. His family was thrilled because no one could make him smile like her. He said that Sophie made him forget about what was wrong.

The last picture ever taken of Jack was this one with Sophie. I just wanted you to know what Sophie does with a great part of her life. If Sophie continued to have Urinary Tract Infections so early on, I am not sure if she would have become a therapy dog. Thanks again for being such a big part in helping Sophie to overcome her Urinary Tract Infections and allowing that to happen!

Sandy and Sophie, Los Angeles, CA May 2011

Close Encounter with A Rattlesnake

Spring is here! Today, we were taking a beautiful walk on a well traveled path that leads to the beach. We had our two dogs Legend and Bleu with us who were pulling of course (they are huskies). This was a good lesson for anyone considering letting your dogs running loose in open areas---you just never know what you might run into. This was actually not even a wilderness area but the path is paved so that you are walking through lots of bushes, shrubs and original California landscape.

Right before us was a huge rattlesnake who was coiled. The dogs were 3 feet away and thankfully my husband saw it first. We slowly pulled the dogs back and retreated. The rattlesnake slithered off.....Please be careful on your hikes and keep a close eye on your pets. This was the last place we would have ever expected to see a snake.

Pet Probiotic Helps With Puppy's Gas and Indigestion

"Dexter"

“I want to thank you for the Power Probiotic. This product is amazing! Dexter (my black 6-month old Toy Poodle) slept awesome last night! Better than he has in weeks! I forgot to give him his usual Probiotic pill at 10pm last night. Well, he got up and walked around a little at 2:45am and seemed a little uncomfortable, so I got up and gave him a 1/2 capsule of Power Probiotic and we went back to bed and I didn't hear a peep out of him until 7:00am. No stomach gurgling, no burping, no nasal congestion, no incessant scratching, no more pacing the floor...Yay!!! This was the 4th night of Power Probiotic, so I really think they are helping. Thank you so much for creating this product and for really caring about our babies!!”

Gardening with your dog or cat is fun

Gardening is great fun for you and your pets. I have never been much of a gardnerer but recently started growing some heirloom tomatoes, beets, etc. It's very relaxing and is good for the whole family to get outside. Season is early but we already grew one tomato, a beet (pictured) and some broccoli. My huskies Bleu and Legend love to watch us in the garden and soak up the sunshine! Legend looks oh so cuddly above but he is quite a mischievious creature. We kept noticing that there were nibbles on our squash and pumpkin plants. It was very odd and we thought that rabbits or bugs were eating the leaves off. We even found some where a few pieces of the leaves were left. Sure enough, I caught my mischievous doggie chomping on the squash plants. Thank goodness he doesn't like the strawberry leaves and tomato plants. He is just having fun pretending he is a billy goat instead of a dog!

Doberman Head Tremors--Holistic Care Can Help

Q: What is the brand name of the "Digestzymes" you use? A LOT of hits come up by petting Digestzymes in the search bar and there must be a hundred different companies/formulas. What do you use for "parathyroid" support? My 20 month old male Dobermann is having small, sporadic head tremors recently.

Please help. I can't stand his life being anything but absolute perfect happiness 24/7. He is my reason for living

A: We understand how upsetting your doberman's head tremors must be. Many people (even some medical professionals) don't comprehend what it is like as it is a very unusual type of condition and unless you witness it, it is very hard to understand. Basically, a head tremor is when a dog's head starts uncontrollably shaking from side to side. It can last for a few minutes and what seems like eternity. It looks similar to those bobbing dog statues. Unlike a doll however, in this case, it is your beloved dog who is suffering.

Holistic care can definitely control the frequency of canine head tremors. Unfortunately, there isn't a simple formula--ie. give your dog these two supplements and the problem will go away. We use K9 Digestive Enzymes, featured on AskAriel. K9 Digestive Enzymes helps dogs and cats improve the absorption of nutrients, enhances digestion and reduces gas and diarrhea. It is good for any pet whether they have head tremors or not. The parathyroid supplement, and other supplements should be carefully reviewed by a veterinarian or veterinary professional before administering.

Here is what is needed to reduce the frequency of head tremors:
1) Put your pet on a grain-free hypoallergenic diet
2) Use Omega oils such as Amazing Omegas
3) Do not use any treats that contain gluten, corn, chicken, etc--all that contain potential allergens that could trigger an attack
4) Use a digestive enzyme such as the Digestzymes mentioned above that will ensure your dog properly absorbs the nutrients in the food
5) Work with a veterinary professional to determine what your dog's triggers are: e.g. low blood sugar, calcium deficiency, food allergies

Dr. Gordon and I provide holistic telephone consultations to help dog owners whose pets have complex health issues such as head tremors. After reviewing your dog's laboratory tests, we would develop a complete holistic plan for your dog including a special diet, supplements and other holistic modalities you can use to help your dog's head tremors. One thing is for sure--holistic care definitely does reduce head tremors in dogs. We have had tremendous success because many times the triggers (differ depending upon each dog's unique circumstance) are common daily foods and activities that you may not even realize could be a problem for your dog. "Happy New Year! Thank you for keeping our Labrador Stanley well. He just celebrated his 9th Birthday! After his cancer diagnosis in early September, we all wondered if he would be here for Halloween, then Thanksgiving, then Christmas, then his birthday.

He has not seen his general vet or specialist since his diagnosis. We attribute his wellness to your products! YOU have BLESSED us immensely! Each time we receive an order from you, somehow Stanley knows "his ladies from California have sent him a package."

Our heartfelt gratitude to all of you!

Minature Schnauzer with Pancreatitis Benefits From Holistic Care

Hello Susan,

I just wanted to drop you a quick note again to say thanks.
Sadly, our dog, Sparky passed away on January 16 this year. He was feeling fine until the last day or two. But on that day, while laying next to me on the couch watching TV, he had heart failure and mercifully died quickly. Our vet said that along with his diabetes, and a "mass" on his liver (we never knew if it was benign or malignant) he also had a heart murmur.

Looking back on last year at this time, he had a serious bout of pancreatitis. But with your helpful and kind nutrition guidance, we were able to pull him through that and he enjoyed another year of quality life - walks in the park, eating normally, fun rides in the car, etc. We were blessed to have had that time with him. Your guidance helped Sparky have that year with us and we are very thankful.

Hopefully, when the time comes for us to adopt another animal friend, we will remember the lessons we learned from you.

Best regards,
Paul Mally

Special Teddy Finds His New Forever Home

"Teddy"

Soooo precious! What a tail wagger! Two year old Teddy is a lovable, affectionate, cuddly, Maltese/Papillon mix. Teddy was confiscated from the home of an animal hoarder and was brought to the Orange County Animal Care Center (a high-kill shelter in Orange, CA). Teddy was born with misshapen front legs. He also was very neglected, covered in mats from the tip of his nose to the tip of his tail.

When Teddy was brought to the shelter, he was very scared and shy. He wasn't used to getting human attention. The shelter wasn't even sure if he was going to be able to be adopted. Ariel Rescue saw that Teddy needed help! Teddy was adopted out of the shelter by one of Ariel Rescue's volunteers. Then he was taken to the vet for an exam. The vet said that Teddy had very strong back legs and a strong back -- very good news for Teddy! However the vet found that Teddy did have a hernia that needed to be surgically repaired. Teddy did get the surgery that he needed. He was fostered in an Ariel Rescue volunteer's home, where he recovered from his surgery. He was given very nutritious food to eat and lots of loving attention.

We don't think that Teddy had ever been groomed before. He was given his very first "beauty bath". He was then introduced to a doggie blow-drier. Teddy did very well being blow-dried after his bath. All his mats were then clipped away and he was given his first hair-cut. He learned to liked being brushed and fussed over. He now looks like a completely different dog than the one who was so neglected.

Teddy has turned out to be a very playful, fun-loving dog. He is able to get around quite well by hopping on his back legs and scooting on his chest. While he was being fostered, he would play with his doggie toys, throwing them up in the air and then chasing them. He could even climb up onto his foster mom's lap! He also had fun playing with the other Ariel Rescue dog that was also being fostered.

Teddy has now found his new forever home with a wonderful woman who has two other dogs. Teddy spends his days playing with his new doggie friends and his new mom. Teddy never again has to be the lonely, scared, sad dog passed over at the shelter. Now he is the pampered, well-loved dog that he deserves to be. Labrador Retriever with Chronic Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) Improves with Nutrition and Supplements

Dear Susan:

I am writing this testimonial so that others like me who are very hesitant to follow instructions from someone (I didn't even know) on the internet can possibly help their dog. Like most people, my dog, Sophie is a part of the family and when she is not doing well, it affects us all. She had recurrent urinary tract inflections that became resistant to antibiotics. And as a result of the large amount of antibiotics, she started to have digestive and itching issues. One thing led to another and after two different vets, with multiple visits, costing lots of money and no improvement I was extremely frustrated at the very least.

After much internet research I came upon, Susan Davis, someone who took the time to explain the importance of proper nutrition for dogs and the extreme role that it plays in their health. I must admit that I was hesitant as first as I looked at the cost of some of the natural supplements and food changes. However, when comparing it to the continuing veterinary bills and medication it ends up to be less expensive. But more importantly, I was able to stop the cycle of ill health (UTI'S, digestive etc) and Sophie was so much happier and healthier!

Susan not only gives you solid advice on how to help your animal feel better but truly cares about you (the owner) and the dog as you can feel it in her compassionate way of discussing the nutritional plan that she sees fit your your particular situation. I could go on and on but suffice it to say that I would highly recommend her and the Ask Ariel supplements and/or other supplements that she feels is appropriate.

Sincerely,
Sandy & Sophie

Note to the reader: Sophie is a pet therapy dog and was recently featured in this article. Click this link to learn more about the wonderful work beautiful Sophie does helping those who are sick in the hospital.

Blossom Finds Her New Forever Home

"Blossom"

What a sweetie! Blossom is an absolutely adorable three year old Australian Shepherd / Sheltie mix!

She was brought into the Orange County Animal Care Center (a high-kill shelter in Orange, CA), along with her one year old son. She had a litter of puppies and her owner kept her and her last puppy alone in the backyard for the entire year. Then both dogs were turned into the shelter. Her puppy got adopted right away, but Blossom was so shy, the shelter wasn't even sure if she was going to be able to be adopted. Ariel Rescue saw that Blossom needed help!

Blossom was adopted out of the shelter by one of Ariel Rescue's volunteers. Then she was taken to the vet for an exam. She was fostered in an Ariel Rescue volunteer's home, where she received her "beauty bath" and was given very nutritious food to eat. Blossom lived up to her name and "blossomed" into a brand new dog.

Blossom has now found her new forever home with a retired school teacher. Blossom spends her days taking walks to the park and cuddling up at the feet of her new "mom" while her new mom reads at the park. Blossom never again has to be the lonely, scared, sad dog passed over at the shelter. Now she is the pampered, well-loved dog that she deserves to be.

Emmett Finds His New Forever Home

"Emmett"

What a sweetie! Emmett is an absolutely adorable 4 year old Bichon Frise / Miniature Poodle mix. He was brought into the Orange County Animal Care Center (a high-kill shelter in Orange, CA). His owners were contacted but they never picked him up. Emmett was at the Orange County Animal Care Center for a whole month -- he was running out of time. Ariel Rescue saw that Emmett needed help!

Emmett was adopted out of the shelter by one of Ariel Rescue's volunteers. Then he was taken to the vet for an exam. He needed eye medication because his dirty hair had been in his eyes. He was fostered in an Ariel Rescue volunteer's home, where he received his "beauty bath" and was given very nutritious food to eat. After one week, his eyes were healed and he was ready for his new home.

Emmett has now found his new forever home with an older couple. Emmett spends his days taking walks and snuggling in the lap of his new "dad". Emmett never again has to be the sad dog passed over at the shelter. Now he is the pampered, well-loved dog that he deserves to be.

Chihuahua with Kidney Disease improves with Kidney Supplements

Dear Ask Ariel,

"I am writing to thank you for your site and products. On New Years Eve I took my 18 month chihuahua Loki to the vet. He had not been eating, was sleeping all the time and was losing weight. He only weighs 2.5 lbs and could not afford to lose weight. I was told by the vet that he had renal failure and would not live long as the treatment and or dialysis for him would be very expensive. I was heartbroken to say the least.

I began to search the internet to try to find something that could help my baby. There was your site, www.askariel.com. I ordered the Cat and Dog Kidney Disease (No-Pill) Package and Kidney Health -- Protein Support For Pets) and I am happy to say that Loki is back to normal. Eating, playing with his sister, running around the house just as if he had never been sick. Thank you so much for the work you do. "

Sincerely,

Ruth Christian

Cat with Inflammatory Bowel Disease IBD Improves using Digestive Supplements

"Snookie"

Snookie has inflammatory bowel disease and has been close to passing away on several occasions. I think the last time they would have put her to asleep, but i was alone and crying so they put her in the hospital for two days on fluids and told me I need to prepare myself and be strong.

They called me and told me to bring her home for the weekend and say my goodbyes. She was so ill and i was heartbroken. I ordered two supplements~ The Soothing Digestive Relief and the Power Probiotic for Snookie and started them that weekend. After one capsule of each, she was a new cat! It was a true miracle!!! ... literally, ONE CAPSULE!!She was no longer in pain, no longer throwing up and was running around playing and purring!!! I was so amazed!!

It has been almost a year and she is still doing so great! She still takes her steroids every other day, but she is no longer in pain and is a very active happy cat! I am so thankful that you gave me more precious time with my Snookie!!

Thank you so very much!

Cocker Spaniel with Mammary Tumor improves using Canine Cancer Supplements

"Cookie"

Cookie is my senior cocker spaniel/dachshund mix rescued a few years ago. Just over a year ago, she had a malignant mammary tumor removed and it was suggested that she have chemotherapy immediately thereafter so it wouldn't come back.

Instead, I did some research for alternatives, found Ask Ariel, and then decided to try the OncoPet and Immune Harmony cancer package. It is obvious that Cookie's health only got better from that point on and I am grateful to Susan Davis for her advice and fabulous products!
Cookie also benefits from Phosphatidyl Serine for her Cushing's Disease, Amazing Omegas, and Power Probiotic.

Thanks also to the Ask Ariel team for superb customer service and fabulous bonus gifts. It is clear that you all care very much about your customers and their furbabies!

Thanks again!!

Cat with Hair Loss is growing hair back with the help of AskAriel

Miracles Do Happen!
"Reine"
Reine appears a lot happier this week than she has been in a long time. She is purring again, tail held high in the air, and very animated. We both think her fur is growing back in. It will take awhile for her tail to look fluffy again as her fur is very fine. But the base of her tail does not look barren the way it has. At this point in time, even though I haven't observed her new behavior for a long period of time, she appears to be getting better by the day. We feel very encouraged for the first time in 1 1/2 years, thanks to you! You have figured out the cause.
Thank you from both of us,
Ginny & John

Cat With Renal Failure (CRF) Improves with Kidney Health

My cat, Petals, was diagnosed with renal failure from her blood work. And, indeed, she was urinating frequently. After I had her teeth cleaned under general anesthesia, she seemed worse. By worse, I mean, she was urinating lots more and thereby drinking more water to quench her thirst. Even though I fed her raw food for cats with good results, Petals craved her favorite treat and I gave it to her not knowing that it contained high crude protein. She began vomiting her meals and grew weak and listless. I thought she was going to die.

For two days she could hardly walk while I kept her hydrated with a eye dropper. I began making funeral plans in my mind--basically wondering at what point should I take her to my vet to put her under. Then my order of Kidney Health from Ask Ariel arrived. I had decided to order it as a last ditch effort, wondering if its power to help kidneys flush out toxins would help my cuddly pet. And help it did! It was like night and day.

Within hours she was eating and not coughing up her wet food. Better yet, she was drinking water on her own and getting stronger. Today she does not urinate excessively. She acts like a healthy cat with a great appetite! Because she is18 years old, I have learned to buy all foods and treats with low protein; and I give her Kidney Health daily. I was so concerned that Petals would not ingest foods mixed with Kidney Health (she's fussy that way). I found that she eats with the same amount of gusto, doesn't hesitate, when her meals contain the Kidney Health powder! I'm so pleased.I believe I'll have my little companion around for an even longer time! Thank you, Ariel! Bless you! Alice

Canine Kidney Disease, Canine Heart Problems Improved

"I would like to thank Susan Davis for all of her knowledge and expertise in nutrition and diet. My Archie and Noonie would not be here today if I hadn't found her! Through her instruction, we have corrected the heart problem Archie had and the kidney problem Noonie had. My vet is amazed and to me, it is no less than a miracle! Susan has taught me how to keep them healthy and happy in their "golden years"

I also want to thank her staff at Ask Ariel Your Pet Nutritionist. They have never failed to get my supplements here on time and exactly as I ordered them. And I must say, Archie looks forward to seeing me open the packages, because he knows there will be a surprise waiting inside for him. He loves the little toys you send and constantly carries them around."

Diet for 6 year old Yorkie

Q: Thankfully, I stumbled onto your blog ;)

Can you please tell me what things I can make for my 6 year old yorkie. I'm not sure what I should or shouldn't be feeding her.

A: This is a terrific question! We work with many, many yorkies and there is no "one" perfect diet that is right for all of them. The reason is that yorkies can have many sensitivities and it is very important to monitor their health. Some yorkies can have a predisposition to liver problems, pancreatitis, IBD and other digestive conditions. So.....without knowing your yorkie's medical history, it would be very difficult to give you specific suggestions.

As a first step however, I would highly recommend getting laboratory tests done on your yorkie including a blood panel and urine analysis. Many times, yorkies, with their sweet nature, may appear playful and fine but in reality, could be having some health concerns. A lot of the time, pet owners may confuse picky eating, especially with yorkies as a more "humanized" cuteness but the reality is--could be an indicator of an underlying stomach acid problem. Since this is quite common, I would recommend using a high quality Probiotic, such as our Power Probiotic to help your Yorkie with overall digestion and good health. This will help prevent digestive problems, especially as she gets older.

If you have already had your yorkie's health completely evaluated, then use some general principles to select the right food and treats for your dog. Do not give Yorkies high-fat foods ever, e.g. peanut butter, cream cheese, cheese, etc--these can be very hard on their digestive system. Use lean meats and plenty of vegetables. Try to use a hypoallergenic, balanced diet. Remember also that what might seem like a small portion, could be a lot for a small adorable Yorkie! If you would like a more detailed, custom diet specifically developed for your yorkie, please know that Susan Davis, our nutritionist, would be happy to help and offer telephone consultations.

Dangerous Foods Not To Feed Pets

During the holidays, it is very tempting to want to “treat” our pets to something special. Unfortunately, this can result in very serious consequences. Many small pets can be adversely affected from what might seem, is a tiny piece of food.

To be on the safe side, it is best to avoid giving your pet anything except extra love and attention during the holiday season. It is often a confusing time, especially if guests are coming to your home, and can be stressful as well. Adding new foods can only compound the problem.

During the holidays, it is quite common for emergency animal clinics to be filled with dogs and cats being brought in after suffering from a severe bout of pancreatitis. Giving pets table scraps such as fat from meat, cooked bones, turkey drippings and gravy, even in small amounts, can make them sick. Pet owners and doting relatives who overindulge the pet in holiday food are not only causing a change in the pet’s diet (which can make them sick on its own) but combining that with high fat foods can lead to serious, sometimes even fatal consequences.

Still, it is natural to want to pamper your pet and so if you want to give your pet an extra snack, plan ahead. Have safe treats such as your pet’s favorite treat available or consider giving fresh vegetables (steamed preferably) or lean meats or fish. A small teaspoon of canned pumpkin (plain pumpkin-not with pumpkin pie spice and sugar!) is also a safe option. Even a piece of a baked sweet potato, white potato or yam is ok.

The following foods, however, can be dangerous so avoid giving them to your pet:
* Chocolate (always toxic even in miniscule amounts)
* Grapes or raisins
* Onions (cooked or raw)
* Sweets (cookies, cake, ice cream, etc.)
* Rolls/bread (gluten is not good for pets!)
* High fat foods such as butter, gravy or turkey drippings
* Cooked bones (they can cause choking and tearing in the GI tract).

The most common thing people tend to do during the holidays is give the dog and cat scraps off the table, such as gravy and pieces of fat. These high fat foods can cause diarrhea, vomiting and overload the pet’s digestive system.
Moreover, overtreating pets during the holidays or anytime leads to obesity. Numerous studies indicate that pet obesity is on the rise contributing to an increase in life-threatening diseases such as diabetes, hepatic lipidosis and cancer.

So to make your holidays special with your furry friends, make safety your number one priority. Keep pets in a designated part of your home if guests come over so that they can’t get loose when the door opens, don’t leave them alone in a room when candles are burning and plan ahead if you want to give them some special treats. Finally, don’t forget those adorable holiday pet toys as those little surprises will keep your pet happy and entertained during this memorable time of year.
