What Are Steroids? Why Are Steroids Prescribed for Pets?

Steroids are medications that are prescribed for reducing inflammation or as an immunosuppresant drug. Reasons Why Dogs Vomit Bile Vs. Food

We've all been there—watching our dogs heave and retch, but did you know that not all episodes of "throwing up" are the same for dogs?  In fact, dogs can vomit food, bile or simply regurgitate. While these might seem similar, they each have distinct reasons why they occur.

Vomiting is a complex reflex that involves the forceful expulsion of stomach contents through the mouth. It typically occurs due to illness, ingestion of toxins, motion sickness, or dietary indiscretion.  When dogs vomit, it often brings up partially digested food along with gastric juices.  Often times, you might notice your dog first licking his lips or circling around seemingly uncomfortable. Vomiting is often preceded by signs of nausea, such as drooling, restlessness, or retching, and may be accompanied by other symptoms like lethargy or abdominal discomfort.  After throwing up, dogs may attempt to eat their vomit and seem to feel better after the food has been expelled. 

Regurgitation, on the other hand, is a passive process that involves the effortless expulsion of undigested food or liquid from the esophagus or pharynx, without the forceful abdominal contractions associated with vomiting. Regurgitation occurs when food or liquid refluxes back into the mouth or throat, often due to issues with swallowing, esophageal dysfunction, or acid reflux.  A dog may be just walking by and a small amount of liquidy undigested food just spills out.  Unlike vomiting, regurgitation typically occurs soon after eating or drinking and may not be preceded by signs of nausea.  It is often a symptom though of dog acid reflux.   

Vomiting bile, also known as bilious vomiting, involves the expulsion of yellow or greenish fluid known as bile from the stomach. Bile is a digestive fluid produced by the liver and stored in the gallbladder, which aids in the digestion and absorption of fats. Dogs often vomit bile in the morning when the stomach is empty. Unlike vomiting food where the dog may be nauseated and restless, vomiting bile is often due to build up of acid in the stomach.  The dog may be first attempting to eat grass to ease their stomach discomfort.   Food can coat the stomach and provide a buffer to absorb the excess acid.

Dogs can experience three forms of expulsion from the digestive tract: vomiting, regurgitation, and vomiting bile.  Understanding the distinctions can help identify the diagnoses and manage the symptoms.  Regardless if your pup experiences recurrent or persistent vomiting, regurgitation, or vomiting bile, it is essential to consult your veterinarian for proper evaluation and management.

You keep smelling that odor.  You try bathing your pet, cleaning the bedding and still the odor persists.   Sometimes you need to be a pet detective to figure out what the source of the odor is.  Pet odors are a warning sign that need your attention!

Careful Planning and Adult Supervision Can Ensure A Wonderful Bond Between Kids and Pets

   

Having a family pet can be beneficial for children. It can help teach them love, respect, and responsibility.  The key for successful pet ownership is adult supervision, age appropriate tasks and open communication regarding expectations and concerns.

Factors to consider:

• the age of the child
• the size, energy, strength and temperament of the pet
• safety for the child and the pet (the location of a walk, presence of other animals that could cause aggressive behavior, hand feeding that could cause nipping, etc.)
• the extent to which the child is able to display empathy for the pet's well being (not chasing it, etc)

Slowly rewarding children with more responsibility as they demonstrate completion of tasks works well.  In addition, having realistic expectations and preparing for danger (e.g. allowing the child to hold the leash while the adult maintains control of the dog) can reduce risks for both the pet and the child.  Careful planning and adult supervision can ensure a wonderful bond between pets and kids that can last a lifetime.

What To Do If Your Dog Is Allergic To Glucosamine

The Adorable Dog Head Tilt

We have all experienced it…you say something to your dog and he tilts his head to look at you with those adorable eyes, but what does it mean?

There are many theories, but here are some of the most common:

• They are trying to get an emotional response from you- many dogs have been taught that you smile every time they tilt their head  and they are just trying to make you happy.  

• Tilting their head allows them to pinpoint the location of the sound better.  Researchers have found that, depending on the shape of the dog’s head, tilting may have some physical or sensory benefit. It is not clear why, but seems to be especially true in dogs with longer muzzles.

• Deep concentration-It has been found that when dogs are extremely focused on the meaning of your words they tilt their head, perhaps listening and watching for social cues.

*Please note- Sudden, ongoing tilting of the head can also be a sign of a medical problem.   Dogs may tilt their head when they have an ear infection or a foreign object in their ear. 

Canine Oral Papillomas - Natural Remedies for Viral Warts

If you notice a bump around your pup's mouth, it might be a common condition known as oral papilloma or viral warts.  Canine papillomas may seem sudden and alarming, but rest assured, they are a benign condition that typically resolves on its own.

What Are Canine Oral Papillomas?

Canine oral papillomas, also known as canine viral warts, are small benign growths caused by the papilloma virus, specifically the canine oral papillomavirus (COPV). These warts typically affect the mouth, lips, and sometimes the throat of dogs. They are most commonly seen in young dogs, often those under the age of two. 

Canine papillomas are highly contagious and can be transmitted through direct contact with an infected dog or contaminated objects, such as toys or bowls.  The incubation period for canine oral papillomas (time from when the dog was exposed to when the wart appears) can vary from 1-2 months so it may be hard to know where and when your dog acquired the virus.   

Canine papillomas are just one type of wart dogs can have.  Dogs can get other types of warts or growths especially as they get older.   While canine mouth warts are generally benign, they can sometimes cause irritation or bleeding if the dog rubs, bites or scratches it. 

Canine Papilloma Virus Is Not The Same As Human Papillomarivus (HPV)

Pet owners may notice these growths on or around their pup’s mouth or lips and refer to this condition as dog hpv virus or hpv on dogs.  However, Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a term specifically used to refer to viruses that infect humans.  The virus that causes these viral warts is a different group of viruses.  Canine Papillomaviruses are species-specific and do not infect humans, and human papillomavirus does not infect dogs.

 

What Do Canine Oral Papillomas Look Like?

Canine papillomas have a distinct appearance that makes them easily recognizable. These growths typically appear as small, raised, cauliflower-like structures in and around a dog's mouth, on the lips, gums, or palate.  They generally appear pinkish or light tan in color. They often have a rounded shape with multiple raised nodules.  Canine papillomas can vary in size and number.  Some dogs may have just one canine mouth wart, while others may get a cluster of warts. 

What Causes Canine Mouth Warts?

The primary cause of oral papillomas in dogs is the canine papillomavirus (CPV). The main reason oral papillomas affect young dogs under the age of two is that some may lack a mature immune system. The immune system identifies foreign invaders, like viruses, and mounts a defense to suppress them. However in a young pup, or a dog with a weakened immune system, the virus may proliferate, leading to the formation of papillomas.

Canine warts are highly contagious and it's common for dogs to have direct contact when they greet one another, feed or drink out of the same bowl or play with the same toys.  Kennels and dog parks are also an easy way  for dog viral warts to spread.   

Treatment of Canine Oral Papillomas

Generally, dog viral warts will resolve on their own but supporting your dog’s immune system can frequently speed up recovery time.  If the warts persist, grow large, or cause issues with eating, your veterinarian may recommend treatments such as cryotherapy (freezing) or surgical removal (rarely necessary). 

Duration of Canine Oral Papillomas 

The duration of canine oral papillomas can vary, but most cases resolve within 1 to 2 months. As a dog’s immune system strengthens, it produces antibodies against the virus and the warts can disappear. However, it is important to realize that the viral warts can come back in dogs with weakened immune systems.  The best natural treatment for oral papillomas is to build your pup's immune system using natural holistic supplements and a hypoallergenic, low inflammatory diet.    What you feed your dog can impact their overall immunity so feeding a high protein, hypoallergenic, low carbohydrate can be helpful.  Avoid sugary treats and high carbohydrate ingredients like grains and starchy carbohydrates.  A raw frozen novel protein diet is helpful.

Why Do Dogs Bury Their Bones?

Thousands of years ago when dogs roamed the wild, burying bones and surplus food was a means of survival. Burying the food acted as a natural preservative (keeping it cooler and out of the sunlight), improved the flavor and provided a hiding place from scavengers. This ensured they would have a tasty treat available in times of need.

Dogs today still have this ancestral urge and you may notice them attempting to bury and hide their food and treats. However, food and bones are not the only things some dogs bury. Talk To Your Pets About What To Expect During The Holidays

Ever wonder what your pets really think about the holidays?  You may be asking--what could they possibly be “thinking” about at all?!  As an Animal Communicator, I can assure you, there is no question whatsoever that animals have thoughts.  And what about all the excitement (aka “stress”) over parties, bringing home packages/gifts, guests arriving, and the hustle-bustle of all that holiday time involves?  It’s one of the most special times of the year — but some household changes can cause distress in our pets.  

Animals are creatures of habit, and disruptions to their daily schedules can result in behavioral changes or health issues.  Possible scenarios include toileting in inappropriate places, unusual aggressiveness, or eating concerns.  With almost 12 years of experience listening to and talking with animals, I have heard some very interesting stories.  I recall a request from a returning client who contacted me just after Christmas.  Her 10-year old Yorkie suddenly became lame, with no apparent cause.  When I spoke with little Tiger, he explained that on Christmas, he overheard a visiting family member commenting on how much he had aged.  Consequently, he believed that he must be so old, that he couldn’t walk!  After doing some energy healing on him, I explained that he was completely able to walk again…and he did!

Just like we humans have different reactions to stressful situations, so do the animals.   The best we can do when new or stressful situations occur in our lives, to help our pets stay healthy and happy, is  TALK to them!  Explain as you would with a young child exactly what you expect to take place.

In Loving Memory Of Donna Jean Davis

In loving memory of our Mother Donna who passed away last night. Donna was an incredibly dedicated mother to her 5 children, 4 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. She was passionate about her family and managed to keep an impeccable home in spite of 5 rambunctious kids. Donna Jean Davis was born in Genoa Wisconsin and followed her dream to go west eventually setting up family life in Arvada, Colorado. Donna loved nature, animals, cooking and especially the mountains. She adored her 6 siblings with whom she remained close. Our Precious Donna will be missed by all and will live forever in our hearts.

What Does It Mean When Your Dog Yawns?

What does it mean when your dog repeatedly yawns? Are they just tired? Perhaps, but there are many possible reasons for repeated yawning and it can signal different things.  Yawning was thought to be a way to replenish oxygen to the brain, but more recent studies have found it to be a means of communicating. 

Dog yawning could mean:

Stress or Anxiousness

Often you will notice that your pup yawns when they are in a stressful situation, such as: a visit to the veterinarian’s office, traveling, getting groomed, or visiting an unknown place. The act of yawning is used as a calming signal for themselves, but also to let you know they are not comfortable in the situation. Conversely, being too excited in a positive situation or place can also trigger yawning. The over excitement is also a stressor to their system and the yawning is a way to calm themselves down.

Indifference
