"Beautiful Bleu was very thin when his owner turned him in to a high kill shelter. His owner complained he had constant diarrhea. In the top photo, you can see his concave tummy and dry coat. When we first adopted Bleu, he would eat readily but then would get sick and not want to eat at all. We found out he had Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency and IBD. We added K9 Digestive Enzymes, Power Probiotic, Soothing Digestive Relief and Gastro ULC to his regimen. We also followed a very strict hypoallergenic raw frozen diet. We were careful not to let anyone give him any foods that were not on his diet. Bleu's health dramatically improved. He started having an appetite in the morning and transformed into a healthy, happy dog." Davis family, CA
What is Exocrine Pancreatic
Insufficiency in Dogs?
Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency (EPI) is a condition in which the pet
is unable to produce sufficient pancreatic enzymes. The lack of enzymes inhibits
the digestions of fats, carbohydrates and proteins and the resulting malabsorption
of nutrients often causes weight loss in the pet. Some breeds are
more prone to the condition and it is more often seen in German Shepherds,
Chows, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, and Rough Coated Collies. The main cause
is thought to be a progressive loss of pancreatic cells, but EPI can also be due
to chronic inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis). The
condition can be diagnosed by your vet using blood and fecal testing. Many pets with EPI often have IBD as well, having many food sensitivities.
Symptoms of Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency in
Dogs
- Weight loss (even with normal
appetite)
- Diarrhea
- Large pale stools
- Gas and indigestion
Natural Remedies for Exocrine Pancreatic
Insufficiency (EPI)
K9 Digestive Enzymes - Contains two animal-based enzymes that are essential for dogs with EPI: Oxbile Extract and HCL. These two nutrients are derived from animals contain natural nutrients and enzymes (to replace the missing ones your pet's pancreas is not producing enough of) to aid in the breakdown and absorption of fats and protein. With EPI it is critical to include animal- based enzymes that aid the food to be absorbed.
Power Probiotic - Pure, safe and natural--absolutely no fillers! Power Probiotic repopulates good intestinal flora which is essential for pets with malabsorption and proper immunity. Power Probiotic supports your pet's bowel and immune health, reducing inflammation and improving digestive discomfort.
Gastro
ULC - Provides natural
stomach acid relief, coating the stomach to relieve pain. Many pets eat
better after using Gastro ULC.
Soothing Digestive Relief - Gentle, effective formula
for the treatment of any type of indigestion in pets. Helps with gas, loose
stool, mucous in stool, tummy rumbling, diarrhea and malabsorption.
Having a proper diet is essential for pets with Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency. Many pets with EPI have food sensitivities and allergies and react strongly to small changes in their diet. Dry kibble and other high fiber foods can make EPI worse. Ask Ariel has had extensive experience helping pets with EPI.
