Senior Dog Finds Renewed Energy

Amy rescued her sweet Allie years ago. As Allie was getting older, she was starting to have a harder time doing the things she used to do:

"My sweet rescue dog Allie has always acted like a puppy. But now that she is getting close to 13 years, I noticed she was having difficulty getting into cars and climbing the stairs. I am very concerned about only giving Allie things that are good for her. I wanted to try something natural and didn’t want to use medication. I tried K9 CurcuMagic and am so happy with the results. Allie has more energy and is able to jump up on my bed again! She is having less problems with the stairs too." Amy, CA.

The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow: Love & Hope from a Senior Rescue Dog

A longtime friend of Ask Ariel recently launched a special book that I would like to share with you – The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow: Love And Hope from a Senior Rescue Dog.

Author Kelly Nardoni poignantly writes about her journey with Annie, a thirteen-fourteen-year-old poodle mix she adopted from a shelter.  Filled with everyday adventures and thoughtful reflections, Kelly includes many adorable photos of Annie to support the story – all with the goal of encouraging senior pet adoption.

Kelly found that there is something unique about adopting an animal whose years are limited.  It helps us uncover what is really important and to navigate our own humanity. This is a heartwarming story about the beauty of the human-animal bond and the love that endures from such companionship.

For more information and to learn where you can find Kelly’s book, please visit www.kellynardoni.com.  If you purchase directly from her site, a portion of the proceeds will benefit senior pet rescue organizations.

Spunky 12 Year Old Labrador Still Happy and Lively with the Help of Ask Ariel Products

Bailey

Our goal is to provide the highest quality products to help pets have the best quality of life possible. We recently received this email and it fills us with pride to know we are making a difference.

"Bailey is an amazing girl and extremely humanistic with a very happy and lively soul.  She is so full of spunk for the ripe age of 12.  She has been taking supplements from Ask Ariel for several years and I know they have helped with the aging process. Even Bailey won’t let you forget to give her the supplements and has quite the daily routine. She will follow you around and herd you into the kitchen until she gets them (however, it probably is because we give them to her in a bite of yam). The Power Probiotic for Pets, Liver&Gallbladder  Supplement  for Pets and Canine Cushing's Support  are a few products (of the many Ask Ariel products) that have been especially helpful in keeping Bailey healthy.

Thank You all for the love, kindness and support you give to each and every one of us."

How to Help Your Dog Through the Senior Years

  • Age is just a number.  Every dog is unique and if kept healthy and active throughout their lives can act years younger than their actual age. Starting them early on a healthy diet and exercise routine can be key.
  • Look for any changes in their behavior  and have them checked out by your veterinarian. Don't think it is just due to aging.  Many health condition found in older pets  (kidney disease, arthritis, hypothyroidism etc.) can be treated with great success
  • Diet and Exercise can have a great impact. Just as in humans, as we age our nutritional needs change. Feeding the proper diet and using holistic supplements (when needed) can improve the quality of life for your pet. For dietary support adding Power Probiotic for Pets and one of our digestive enzyme products can help them get the most from their diet
  • Old dogs can and do learn new tricks! Teaching your dog new things can help fight boredom and also keep their minds sharp. Using Purrfect CoQ10 for Pets can help with energy, alertness and heart health too.
  • The young will keep you young. Consider adding a new friend for your elderly pet. Dogs are pack animals and  some research has found that when multiple pets live together they live longer and have fewer medical problems.
  • Modify their living environment as needed. As pets age, they may need to have changes made to keep them safe and comfortable. It may include ramps to access car and furniture, elevated feeding bowls, padded beds to lessen pain, etc.

Keeping Your Senior Pet Healthy

The care of a senior pet will differ from that of younger one.  It's never too late to make healthy changes to your pet's diet and supplement regimen.  Many times pet owners may see signs of a pet's deterioration and conclude that is just "old age" when in fact, it a health problem that can be readily addressed.  Taking your senior pet in at least twice a year for regular check-ups that include laboratory tests (blood and urine) every 6 months is a way to find potential health problems early.

What is your your pet's true age in human years? According to the American Veterinary Medical Association your pets age is estimated as:

*Small: 0-20 lbs; Medium: 21-50 lbs; Large: 51-90 lbs; Very large: >90 lbs

Older Pet Care Considerations

These are some considerations that become more critical as a pet gets older:
  • Increased veterinary care- senior pets should have more frequent veterinarian exams to monitor their health
  • Diet and nutrition- nutritional needs change as the pet ages ---it's never too late to improve your pet's diet!
  • Weight control - changes in weight ( gain or loss) may be a sign of a problem
  • Parasite control-becomes more important due to an immune system not being as effective as in younger pets
  • Maintaining mobility-older pets keeping mobile through exercise helps keep them healthier. Curcumin for Pets reduces inflammation and improves mobility in both cats and dogs.
  • Vaccination - vaccination needs may change, and a program for geriatric pets should be discussed
  • Mental health-Senior pets can begin to show signs of senility.  Keeping them stimulated and mentally active can helpDogs in particular can display dementia and using Dog Brain Booster can greatly help.
  • Environmental considerations- reevaluate your pets environment for comfort and safety.
You can play a big role in your pet's health, as they age, by watching for physical and behavioral changes. Often your pet may show behavior changes before a disease is detected.  The following are some behavioral changes an older pet may dipslay:
  • Increased reaction to sounds
  • Increased vocalization
  • Confusion
  • Disorientation
  • Decreased interaction w/humans
  • Increased aggressive/protective behavior or anxiety
  • Increased anxiety
  • House soiling
  • Decreased self-hygiene/grooming
Be sure to bring your pet to the veterinarian if you notice any of these changes.  Adding powerful, purified Omega 3 fatty acids found in Amazing Omegas is essential for all aging cats and dogs.
