Beware of Tick Borne Illness

Ticks are back and seem to be everywhere. You don’t have to be out in the wilderness to encounter ticks. Ticks can attach themselves to pets while they are outside, and can feed on their blood for several days.

Some of the diseases that ticks can transmit to pets include Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and ehrlichiosis. Fortunately only a small fraction of ticks carry these diseases.
Regularly checking your pet for ticks after they have been outside can also help prevent tick-borne illnesses.

If you find a tick on your pet, it's important to remove it as soon as possible. Use tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible, and twist to pull the tick off. Talk to your veterinarian about the best approach for tick prevention for your pet.

Ticks can be a concern not only for pets but also for humans, as they pose a potential health risk. When spending time outdoors, it's crucial for pet owners to be vigilant in protecting both their furry companions and themselves from tick-borne diseases. Wearing long sleeves, using tick repellents, and avoiding tall grass and wooded areas can help reduce the risk of tick encounters. Additionally, creating a tick-safe zone in your yard by keeping grass short and removing leaf litter can minimize the likelihood of ticks thriving in your immediate environment. Regularly inspecting yourself and your pets after outdoor activities can go a long way in early detection and prevention of tick-borne illnesses. By taking these precautions, you can ensure a safer and more enjoyable outdoor experience for both you and your pets.
