Chocolates On Valentine's Day Are A Dangerous Hazard For Pets

Few things go together like a heart shaped box of chocolate and Valentine's Day. Here is a little reminder why this delicious treat is only for humans.

Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine – both are stimulants that can speed up the heart rate. Theobromine is highly toxic to dogs and cats, they cannot metabolize it as effectively as humans. It can buildup in their system and cause tremors, seizures or a heart attack. The darker the chocolate, the greater concentration of theobromine. Chocolate poisoning is much more common in dogs than cats, as most cats are more interested in the paper wrappers than the chocolate.

Immediate veterinary care is recommended for any dog or cat that eats chocolate. To ensure you and your pets have a Happy Valentine's Day, please keep chocolates safely away from your pet's reach ❤️
