Tips To Help Your Dog Lose Weight

Dennis Before

Dennis Now
Pet nutrition is very important to us at Askariel.com, That is why this story caught our attention.   Brooke Burton, rescued her miniature dachshund Dennis at a weight of 56 pounds!   He now weighs a trim 12 pounds.  The message that diet and exercise can work to improve your pet’s health is undeniable.  See the Today article to learn about Dennis’ journey. Burton has also joined forces with Ohio State University to form Dennis’ Legacy, which is a nonprofit venture whose mission is to “support nutritional education and care of obese animals”

Pet obesity can lead to many health concerns including: joint pain, digestive system issues, and undue stress to their heart and lungs. Unfortunately the majority of pets are overweight.  Some factors contribute to their pet's obesity---feeding too many carbohydrates in food, not getting enough exercise, free feeding and "overtreating" our pets.  When a pet has too many carbohydrates in the diet, just like with people, they feel overly hungry.  Their insulin spikes from the carbs.  To help your pet feel less hungry, you can add more fiber (e.g. vegetables such as green beans and pumpkin) and be sure you are feeding a high protein diet.  Dry kibble is very high in carbohydrates so choosing a canned or raw frozen diet and mixing with plenty of vegetables will help.  If possible, try to feed your pet a mid-day meal as it is easy to feel famished by the end of the day.  Avoid free feeding.  Feed pets regular meals to prevent overfeeding.  Finally, we all love to spoil our pets, but the best way to keep your pet fit and trim is to use the treats after exercising and keep a designated amount per day in a little bag so that you know when you reach the limit.  Food isn't the only way to spoil your pet.  A big hug, a nice walk and a little extra attention seem to work quite well too!

Know Of A Neglected Pet? Here is How You Can Help!

Thanks to everyone for the thoughtful, kind words about Whitey. Whitey taught our community a very important message: LOVE THY NEIGHBOR! We all have a neighbor or friend with a nonstop barking dog, a neglected pet or just one that we don't think is being taken care of the way it should be. Unless the pet is severely abused, Animal Control is not going to be able to do anything! Of course if the animal is severely neglected, you can try calling them first, but most of the time, that just isn't going to help.  That means the ONLY way to help the pet is to reach out to the owner. It's easy to condemn the owner or look the other way. Some may try to steal the pet or rally other neighbors to hate the neighbor. That rarely ends up helping the pet....If you really want to help the pet, it is up to you and your community to reach out to the owner to try to help. How? Love thy neighbor---even if that person is abhorrent to you. Find a way to connect with the owner in a positive way. Clearly, they don't understand or haven't been "awakened" to the wonderful relationship that can come from loving a pet. You might want to consider (either by yourself or in conjunction with another neighbor) leaving the owner a friendly note offering to walk the pet, help with the care of the pet or ask if you can visit the pet. If it is a scary person, then of course, use common sense for your personal safety. But, a lot of times, the pet owner is just uninformed about animals or the pet just isn't a priority. Kindness and compassion for the owner, no matter how hard, might help the pet and can go a long way.

In Memory Of Beloved Prince Whitey

Prince Whitey

We rescued Whitey as an elderly dog who had been severely neglected for most of his life.  He was a "tough" dog who was not initially affectionate as he had never experienced life as a family member.  We only had Whitey in his elderly years when he was sick but we hope and pray that the 1 year and 10 months we gave him helped erase all of the sadness he experienced before.  Prince Whitey died today after suffering from dementia, liver disease and severe arthritis.  We kept him going even after the first stroke but a second stroke took him.  Rest in peace beloved.  We will cherish you always!

Prayer For Prince Whitey
In sorrow and love
We remember
Our beloved Prince Whitey
Who provided companionship
And endless joy.
You were more than a pet to us,
Becoming a member of our family,
Providing consolation in times of loss,
Setting An Example To Keep On Fighting
Even When Life Gets Tough
An Inspiration To Us For Your CourageA True Warrier To the End
Giving us laughter and delight
And a sense of well-being,
Rich with memories,
Rich in love.
The pain is deep.
The empty space,
Too wide to comprehend.
Forgive us Whitey for our decision to remove you from
The suffering you endured.
We did it with deep sorrow
Placing kindness for you above
Our desire for more time together
G-d of the bereaved,
Grant us solace in the days ahead,
And peace of mind as time passes.
Let our memories of the time  together
With Whitey
Be an endless source of wonder
In tribute to his  memory.
Rest in peace.

If you have lost a beloved pet, we hope you can use this prayer and replace with your pet's name to give you peace.

Natural Treatments For Urinary Incontinence in Pets

Urinary incontinence is often thought to be part of the aging process and it is true that many older dogs can be inflicted with the condition, but it can affect dogs of any age.  There are certain conditions that can contribute to dogs losing control of their bladder (including kidney disease,  endocrine disorders and cognitive dysfunction disorder), but it could also be a low level infection.

The most common signs of bladder control problems are excessive licking of the vulva or penis, often causing redness, dripping of urine, or often the pet owner noticing their sleeping area smelling strongly of urine.
Common Causes Of Urinary Incontinence in Pets:
Hormonal Imbalance –  a low level of estrogen is often found in older female dogs and contribute to lack of bladder control.  Breeds with higher risk include: spaniels, Old English Sheepdogs, Doberman Pinschers, and Boxers
Neurological Problems- older pets often have vertebrae, or spinal issues that hinder them from being able to have full sensation and can cause incontinence.
Low Level Infection- Perhaps the most common cause of loss of bladder control (incontinence) is a low grade (often undetectable) bladder infection that can affect dogs of any age.  This can cause inflammation and pain in the urethra and/or bladder.  Some dogs are prone to repeat infections and a comprehensive approach can help alleviate frequent reoccurrences.
Steps To Eliminate Incontinence Due to Low Grade Urinary Tract Infections
1. Choose a hypoallergenic, grain-free food to reduce overall inflammation.  Grains such as oats, wheat, and corn can trigger. Certain proteins can also be problematic can cause an inflammatory response. Include your pet’s current diet on the Ask Ariel order form and you will receive a free diet suggestion based on the symtpoms you provide about your pet.  The suggestion will be on the packing slip that comes with the product directions.

2. Use natural, veterinary approved supplements to prevent future infections, reduce the likelihood of stone and crystal formation and help control interstitial cystitis. Once a pet has had multiple chronic urinary tract infections or interstitial cystitis, just changing the diet alone will not be sufficient to prevent reinfection. A combination of both diet and holistic supplements will have the best results.
Akutur- focuses on the bladder and urinary tract to restore the balance and reduce inflammation and reduce repeat infections. Very helpful for interstitial cystitis.

3.  Work with your vet to determine the best way to test your pet's urinary pH regularly.

Benign Sebaceous Growth On Husky's Paw

Here's our beloved rescue dog Legend celebrating with our girls. He is wearing a sock because we found a malleable, protruding tumor on his paw a few days ago that Dr. Gordon removed immediately. Any tumors on the feet or paws can signal cancer and need emergency attention. So blessed to receive the report on XMAS that Legend's tumor is a benign, sebaceous growth!

This is Legend's second tumor.  The first was melanoma on his eye.  Please familiarize yourself with the warning signs of cancer.  We check Legend all the time and he just happened to be lying comfortably on his back with his feet up in the air.  Underneath the fur,  I noticed a TINY red, bleeding area which I thought was a cut as he loves to run in the woods.  Upon closer inspection, I realized it was a formed mass.  Any small growths on the paws require immediate attention as these lumps could very well be cancer which can appear to be "nothing".  The sooner the growth is removed, the less risk your pet has of metastasis.  In our case, we were very fortunate and now know that Siberian huskies are susceptible to these type of benign tumors.   Please don't wait---show your vet any growths to be sure they are benign.

Giving Thanks To Pet Rescuers and Owners of Special Needs Pets

 Wrangler

Wishing Happy Holidays to all! Wrangler is a special needs rescue dog who has an esophageal disorder (cricopharyngeal achalasia) that requires a feeding tube and constant management by his Mom Gina. Ask Ariel friend Gina Gould is an acuscope therapist and her treatments, TLC and the dedicated support of Leashes of Love Rescue have given him a chance to live a "normal" life. Thanks to all the caring parents of special needs pets and the wonderful rescuers who save thousands of dogs and cats that would otherwise perish in the shelters.  Having a special needs pet is a lot of work and requires extra time that many of us don't have.  It's always a miracle when a doggie as special as this one is able to live out his life because of the incredible dedication of a group of people who are deeply dedicated to the welfare of animals.

Holistic Treatment for Perianal Fistulas in Dogs

Perianal fistulas, or anal furunculosis, is a condition in dogs that causes painful, ulcerated tracts or tunnels around the anus. They can be deep and may extend inward, causing discomfort and inflammation. Dogs with perianal fistulas often experience symptoms such as pain, swelling, redness, discharge, and difficulty or discomfort during bowel movements.

Perianal fistulas can be a chronic and recurring condition, affecting certain breeds more commonly, such as German Shepherds, Irish Setters, Boxers, and Bulldogs. When the condition is mild you may not notice there is a problem, but as it continues to progress watch for signs of your pet straining to defecate, having blood in their feces, and a decrease in appetite. You might also notice that they excessively lick their tail and hindquarters, often leading to infection with chronic draining ulcers that can be very painful.

The exact cause is not fully understood, but several factors are believed to contribute to their development:

  • Immune system dysfunction - An abnormal immune response is thought to play a significant role in the development of perianal fistulas. Dogs with compromised immune systems or autoimmune disorders may be more susceptible to this condition.
  • Chronic inflammation - Chronic inflammation of the perianal region, often due to underlying conditions such as allergies, infections, or anal sac disease, can contribute to the development of fistulas.
  • Infections -Secondary bacterial or fungal infections in the perianal area can worsen the condition and contribute to the formation of fistulas.
  • Dietary factors - Some research has suggested a potential link between diet and perianal fistulas. Specific dietary components or sensitivities may trigger or exacerbate the condition in susceptible individuals.
  • Environmental factors - Environmental factors, such as exposure to certain irritants or allergens, may contribute to the development or progression of perianal fistulas.

What Is a Fistula?

A fistula is an abnormal connection or passageway that forms between two organs, vessels, or structures in the body that are not normally connected. This connection creates an unnatural channel, allowing fluids or substances to flow between these structures. Fistulas can occur in various parts of the body, not just the perianal area.  For example, anal sac fistulas are abnormal connections or tracts that form between the anal sacs and the skin surrounding the anus. This condition can cause discomfort, pain, and the formation of draining tracts that may ooze pus and blood.

Mild Vs Severe Perianal Fistulas

Fistulas can progress with symptoms becoming more severe which is why it is so important to seek treatment from a veterinarian early.  Mild perianal fistulas may just appear to be a pustule with erosions.  Severe cases can be bleeding sinus cavities with several draining tracts oozing blood and pus. The open sores can become swollen and red and the discharge from the fistulas generally has a strong foul odor.

Treatment For Perianal Fistulas In Dogs

Perianal fistulas can be challenging to manage and require a comprehensive approach. Treatment often involves a combination of medications, topical treatments, hygiene, dietary adjustments, and natural supplements.

  • Treatment with prescription medications (oral and topical) can help temporarily clear up the infection.  Check with your veterinarian about using natural hypocholorous acid or silver sprays topically to help heal the sore areas.

  • Diet Changes -A hypoallergenic, novel protein diet may help support your dog's overall health and immune system. Some pet owners have reported improvement in perianal fistula symptoms by avoiding common allergens or inflammatory ingredients. Common allergens for dogs may include grains, beef, and chicken. Artificial additives and preservatives can contribute to inflammation. Using a natural, minimally processed diet with fiber in the form of vegetables and pumpkin can help.
  • Clipping of the perianal region to increase ventilation along with cleaning the area.  Use unscented baby wipes to keep your dog's butt clean.  Controlling bacteria is paramount when dealing with perianal fistulas in dogs.  Wash your dog's bedding regularly and encourage them to lie on soft mats instead of the floor or cement.

Supplements For Perianal Fistulas in Dogs

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids - Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in fish oil or flaxseed oil, have anti-inflammatory properties and may help reduce inflammation associated with perianal fistulas.
  • Probiotics - Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that can help support digestive health and promote a balanced immune system. They may assist in maintaining a healthy gut microbiome, potentially reducing inflammation and improving immune function.  Power Probiotic for Petsreplenishes good bacteria reducing the possibility of infection.
  • Plant Sterols: Plant sterols have been studied for potential health benefits, such as anti-inflammatory effects and immune modulation.  By balancing the immune response and reducing inflammation, plant sterols may help alleviate symptoms associated with perianal fistulas. Immune Harmony contains natural plant sterols to help modulate and balance your dog's immune response.
  • Herbal Remedies - Some herbal remedies, such as quercetin and olive leaf extract have natural anti-inflammatory properties. Topical application of silver spray may also help provide relief and promote healing.  AllerEaze and Olive Leaf Extract help reduce your dog's histamine response and fight infection.
  • Hemp Extract – Hemp extract has been studied for its potential therapeutic properties, including anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects. These properties may offer some benefits for dogs with perianal fistulas by reducing inflammation and discomfort associated with the condition.  Happy Paws Drops contains 550mg of full spectrum hemp extract in an unflavored all-natural coconut oil base. Each 1oz bottle 100% organic. Made in the USA.  Happy Paws Drops can also help relieve the pain and discomfort associated with perianal fistulas.

If you suspect your dog may have perianal fistulas, it is important to consult with a veterinarian who can provide a proper diagnosis, determine the underlying causes, and develop an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your dog's specific needs.
