Can Your Cat Benefit From A Raw Diet?

Cats are carnivores and thrive on higher protein diets made with real meat, fish or poultry. Raw frozen pet food can be especially helpful for both cats and dogs with allergies, digestive problems, urinary issues and cancer. Feeding raw doesn't need to be all or nothing. Adding just a little raw food to your pet’s diet can be beneficial. Many people mix raw with canned food or feed it for at least one of the pet’s meals. If your pet has allergies, choosing a novel hypoallergenic protein source like rabbit or venison can be very beneficial.

Benefits Of A Raw Food Diet

Raw frozen pet food is the gold standard in pet nutrition as it contains real meat, vegetables and omega 3s. Raw frozen diets are especially helpful for pets with allergies, digestive problems and chronic infections. Raw freeze-dried diets are a great option for treats and for pets that don’t like raw frozen. Feeding your pet a raw diet doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Try mixing a small patty or raw freeze-dried pieces into your pet’s regular diet. Since raw food is more expensive due to the higher meat and vegetable content, many pet owners incorporate these diets with canned food and homemade vegetables. We hope you can consider adding raw food to your pet's diet for superior nutrition and health benefits.

Rawgust Tip- How To Transition To Raw

It’s  RAWgust and a great time to learn more about the benefits of feeding raw food to your pets! Raw frozen pet food diets are the gold standard of pet nutrition. Raw frozen diets are especially helpful for pets with allergies, asthma and digestive problems.

Here are a few tips on how to introduce raw frozen into your pet’s diet. Start by adding a small amount to your cat or dog's current food. Slowly increase the raw food portion over a week's time as you decrease your pet's current diet.

Raw frozen diets are found in the freezer section at your local pet store. They usually come in different sizes like large patties for big dogs, smaller size patties or in bite sized pieces. Bring a bag home and store in the freezer. Open the bag and take out a small portion. Store the portion in a container in the refrigerator. Let it defrost for a few hours. NEVER defrost sitting on the counter as the food will become contaminated with bacteria.

You can mix the raw food with vegetables, canned food or kibble. If your pet doesn’t like the taste, you can try crumbling a little raw freeze-dried on top or buy raw freeze-dried toppers.

Raw chicken can cause food allergies in dogs and cats

Raw Chicken is still chicken and could be an allergen for your dog or cats.  There is a popular opinion that if a cat or dog has allergies and then eats raw food, their allergy symptoms such as diarrhea, eye staining, itching, scratching and hair loss will improve.  Yes, it is true that raw food is easier to digest and anytime a pet is switched from dry kibble for example to a raw frozen diet, it is typical to see improved digestive symptoms which in turn can improve allergy symptoms.  However, if a cat or dog is allergic to chicken or poultry, whether the food is raw, cooked, overcooked or in whatever form---it is still chicken.   To learn more about why chicken could be a potential allergen for your dog or cat, please read this detailed article about chicken food allergies.  So, many pet owners can become extremely frustrated and erroneously conclude that a raw diet won't help their pet's allergies, when in fact it can.  But, what is important, is to understand that when choosing a raw frozen diet, the pet owner needs to look for a hypoallergenic "novel" protein such as rabbit.  Rabbit seems to work very well for dogs and cats with allergies.
