January has been designated as National Thyroid Awareness Month. According to the American Thyroid Association, it is believed that as many as 1 in 10 people suffers from thyroid disorders. But people are not the only ones suffering from thyroid disease, did you know that dogs and cats can also have thyroid disorders? Most commonly dogs will have Hypothyroidism (underactive) and cats will suffer from Hyperthyroidism (overactive). Just as with their human counterparts, many times the condition goes undiagnosed.
