What To Do If Your Cat or Dog Is Coughing

If your cat or dog is coughing, this should ALWAYS be viewed as serious, especially if you have an older pet.  Dogs coming from shelters and that play in social daycare groups are prone to get kennel cough.  This is highly contagious and can quickly turn into pneumonia.  But coughing in an older dog, even if very subtle, requires a call to your vet.  Why? Because reasons for dog coughing can range from an easily treatable infection such as kennel cough to cancer.  Dogs that have heart issues, tumors on the lung, pleural effusion---all need to be seen by a veterinarian right away.  The same is true for cats.  A common reason why a cat may be coughing is feline asthma.  Regardless, coughing is a serious matter.  Please read more about the reasons your pet may be coughing in this indepth article.
