Dog Kidney Failure Symptoms

Ariel

Beautiful Ariel, our beloved dog, appeared fine and healthy one day and then within a few days, was diagnosed with fatal dog kidney failure.  Symptoms of dog kidney failure can appear out of the blue.  This is because symptoms don't often appear until approximately 75% of your dog or cat's kidney function has diminished.  Senior dogs and especially senior cats are prone to kidney disease so it is very important to keep  watchful eye out for these signs and symptoms.

Signs and Symptoms of Dog Kidney Failure

Unfortunately, laboratory tests may not show kidney insufficiency in cats and dogs until your pet’s kidney function is about 65-70% deteriorated. Cats for example, may be in end-stage renal faiilure and have lost significant amounts of weight before it is discovered. Thus, it is extremely important to watch these signs in your pet and get regular laboratory tests to closely monitor their health.
  • Increased urination
  • Increased thirst
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Strong (ammonia-like) breath odor
  • Pain, discomfort in the back
