5 Easy Tips To Give Pets Pills

Think of giving your pet a pill as a STRATEGY GAME (such as chess)---not a chore. If you approach it this way, you’ll be sure to win every time!

1) Try hiding the entire capsule in something special:

--unique flavor/brand of canned food (only given with the pill)
--small meatball
--mashed potato or yams
--plain yogurt or hummus
--baby food
--canned pumpkin or butternut squash
--coconut oil (please do NOT use peanut butter---many pets are allergic!)

2) If your pet manages to lick off the special treat and drop the pill, try:

--opening the capsule and mixing into food; start with a small amount—just a dash and then steadily increase as your pet gets used to the new taste

3) If your pet won’t eat the food, then find a special “topper” such as canned salmon or a small piece of meat or crumbled freeze dried food

---open the capsule (supplements ONLY--not medications), sprinkle in a small spot and put the special topper right above the powder from the supplement capsules

4) If unsuccessful, try showing your pet the special treat, then opening your pet’s mouth, inserting the pill gently into the back of the throat, massaging it down and then:

--reward your pet for taking the pill and give them the special treat so that you are assured the pill has been swallowed

5) Finally, for some pets, using a syringe may be the quickest and most foolproof way to administer pills

--open all the capsules and/or crush the tablets, mix the powder together with some broth and squirt into your pet's mouth (not for medications--just supplements)

The first time is always the hardest but then once you have your routine, the "pill administering" game is easy and you'll both win because your pet will feel better!
