Golden Retriever Scooting, Chewing on Rear End

Q: My 2 year old Golden Retriever scoots on her rear end. She is itching and chewing on her butt all the time. I brought her to the veterinarian and they said her anal glands are fine. She is always trying to lick herself and I have to use an ecollar to prevent her from constantly licking. I have tried topical sprays and they don't help. I feed her an organic dry dog food. Can you help?

A: There are a variety of reasons why your golden retriever might scoot and chew on her rear end. First, you need to be sure you have eliminated the possibility of fleas and parasites (and anal gland impaction). Once your veterinarian has ruled that out, then the scooting is generally either due to yeast or allergies or both. In human health, we often hear of jock itch or vaginal yeast infections. This is due to an overgrowth of candida yeast. Yeast can cause a variety of symptoms including gas, poor digestion, ear infections and ITCHINESS! The same is true of our pets although this tends to manifest itself in the rear-end, ears and groin.
In order to stop your Golden Retriever's itching and scooting on the outside, you need to treat the yeast and intestinal disbiosis on the inside.

First, put your golden retriever on a quality Probiotic. We highly recommend Power Probiotic because it is third party tested and proven to work. Most people don't realize that when you purchase supplements--many times, what the manufacturer indicates on the label may not be what actually is delivered. This is especially true of Probiotics. It is really important to use a multi-strain formula that guarantees potency at the time you open the bottle. The Power Probiotic will help immediately to reduce your Golden retriever's itching and scooting by helping to rebalance the intestinal flora. The Power Probiotic contains the good bacteria to help your dog fight off the yeast.

Next, you need to use a reliable antifungal for your golden retriever. The best program for this is the Myco-zyme yeast package. This consists of Myco-zyme to control the yeast + Probiotic + Notatum anti-inflammatory + Amazing Omegas which helps to restore a lustrous coat, rebalance the flora and also reduces inflammation. Yeast can make a pet very itchy and perpetually put a strain on their immune system. You need to use an antifungal product to help kill off the yeast while the other products rebalance the intestinal flora so it doesn't come back. Generally one round of the antifungal treatment is all that is needed provided you change your dog's diet to ensure it is not promoting yeast overgrowth.

Give your golden retriever plenty of green vegetables such as green beans as yeast thrive in an acidic environment. The vegetables provide fiber, vitamins and minerals which promote a healthy intestinal tract. Try to switch to a canned, homemade or raw frozen diet. Dry dog foods, even organic foods can promote yeast overgrowth since many contain grains.
